Description
Endotracheal Tube Cuffed vs. Uncuffed
| Parameter | Cuffed Endotracheal Tube | Uncuffed Endotracheal Tube |
|---|---|---|
| Airway Seal | Has an inflatable balloon (cuff) that seals the airway and helps prevent air leakage. | No balloon is present; it relies on the natural anatomical fit to create an airway seal. |
| Best Suited For | Commonly used in adults and children, particularly where controlled ventilation or airway protection is required. | Mainly used in neonates, infants, and small children where minimizing pressure on the tracheal wall may be preferred. |
| Size Range (ID) | 3.0 mm – 10.0 mm | 2.0 mm – 11.0 mm, generally in 0.5 mm increments |
| Key Benefit | HVLP (High-Volume, Low-Pressure) cuff provides an effective airway seal while reducing pressure on the tracheal mucosa. | Avoids cuff-related pressure on the tracheal wall and may reduce pressure-related airway injury in paediatric patients. |
Applications of Endotracheal Tube
- In the Operating rooms for general anaesthesia
- In the Intensive care unit (ICU) for long-term care
- In Emergency care for rapid intubation
- Airway management in the ambulance
- For Removal of foreign objects from the airway
- To help in the Aspiration of the airway protection in unconscious patients
- For Support ventilation in critical care and surgical procedures.
